Wrestlers, it’s time to take a look at the big picture. In just 14 short weeks, the State Wrestling Tournament will be here. While that may sound far off, in reality, it’s just around the corner. With one week of pre-season training left before regular season practices officially start, this is your opportunity to set the tone for your season. Being prepared—mentally and physically—will make all the difference as you step onto the mat each week, progressing toward your goals.
Preparing yourself isn’t just about the physical grind; it’s about strengthening your mind to handle the intensity of a wrestling season. Mental toughness will be what sustains you during long practices, tough matches, and late nights. Start each day with a clear purpose and focus on why you’re putting in the work. As Tony Robbins says, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” Visualize yourself succeeding in each match, staying resilient even in tough situations, and lifting that state championship trophy.
Physically, you should already be pushing yourself in pre-season conditioning. This week is all about getting comfortable with discomfort and embracing the hard work. Make every rep, every sprint, and every drill count. “You’ve got to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” says motivational speaker Gary Becka. And he’s right—success in wrestling comes from putting yourself through challenges that others might shy away from. The pain you experience now is the preparation that will power you through when the stakes are high.
Your body is your tool, and it needs the right fuel to perform. Take your nutrition seriously—think of food as fuel that will sustain your energy and build your strength. Lean proteins, complex carbs, and plenty of fruits and vegetables are your friends, not just because they help with performance, but because they keep your mind sharp and focused.
Tim Tebow, who’s known for his dedication on and off the field, once said, “Success comes when preparation meets opportunity.” Don’t let the chance to compete at your best slip away because you cut corners in your diet. Start by cutting out junk foods and sugary drinks, and aim for a balanced plate at every meal. Keep water close by to stay hydrated; when you’re properly hydrated, your muscles work better, your mind stays clearer, and you can outlast the competition.
It’s easy to underestimate the value of sleep, especially when there’s schoolwork to finish or practices that keep you at the gym late. But sleep is essential for both physical recovery and mental alertness. Robbins emphasizes the importance of rest, stating, “Your body is a reflection of your lifestyle.” If you’re staying up late and missing sleep, it will show—not only in your performance but in your attitude and focus. Aim for 8-9 hours each night to let your body heal and your mind reset for the day ahead.
Getting enough rest isn’t just about going to bed early; it’s about creating a routine that prioritizes rest. Try winding down without screens or heavy meals right before bed, and get into a consistent sleep schedule that lets you recover fully. You’ll notice the difference in your energy, endurance, and ability to stay calm under pressure.
For a student-athlete, success isn’t just about winning matches; it’s about handling responsibilities in and out of the gym. Being organized and proactive with schoolwork ensures you’re not feeling overwhelmed or distracted when it’s time to focus on wrestling. Set aside dedicated study times so that when you’re in practice, your mind is clear.
This final pre-season week is a great time to check in with teachers, set academic goals, and organize your study schedule to align with your wrestling commitments. Tebow also reminds us, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Your hard work isn’t limited to the gym; it includes the time you invest in your education. Give it the same intensity you bring to the mat.
With only 14 weeks until the State Tournament, every day counts. Every practice, every meal, and every hour of sleep is one step closer to the wrestler you’re aiming to be. You have a chance to approach this season fully prepared, with nothing left to chance.
Becka once said, “If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.” Each choice you make this week—whether to work harder, eat healthier, sleep longer, or study smarter—is a step forward. Your goals are within reach, but it’s up to you to put in the effort that brings them closer.
Wrestling demands total dedication, and this is your chance to start on the right foot. In this final week before the season kicks into high gear, use your time wisely and stay focused on what you want to achieve. Take each practice, each drill, each study session seriously. Be proud of yourself, but don’t let pride make you complacent; let it drive you to push harder.
Remember, the clock is ticking, and each day is an opportunity. This season is your time to show up, give everything you have, and leave nothing behind. As Robbins says, “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” So begin it, with commitment, pride, and purpose. The countdown to greatness starts now—take each step with confidence and determination, and you’ll be ready when the final whistle blows.
