Quote from SD USA Wrestling Board on February 15, 2023, 4:21 pmTo all potential USA Wrestling athletes and coaches.....
Below is a link that will take you to the USA Wrestling membership system help link. This should answer all your questions on how to get an athlete membership and all coaches related memberships. PLEASE do not wait to long to get these memberships for your athlete, or for yourself as a potential coach. The minimum needed to be considered to coach at an event is a "Wrestling Leader." There is a background check and a SafeSport course involved. It does take a little bit of time to complete. Some regional and national level tournaments may also require the Bronze level coaching certification, which can also be completed on the USA site. If your athlete is wanting to compete in any USA event, it is advised they get the "Full Athlete" membership.
Please reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions.

Quote from SD USA Wrestling Board on March 5, 2023, 8:41 pmThis happens every year when it gets closer to AAU Regions and State Freestyle Friday at the state AAU tournament. Please pay attention to your Region and the registration deadline "time" for Cadets. It looks as though most Region Cadet deadline sing-ups are Thursday, March 9th. Since Freestyle is sanctioned through USA, your Cadet, Junior boy or girl will NEED the Full Athlete membership. The cards are different than AAU, and will NOT work.
Coaches...again remember that you will need a Wrestling Leader card at a minimum at Regions, but at the state tournament it will be REQUIRED you have the Bronze level coaching certification if you want to receive a coaches band. It would probably be in your best interest to start taking the online training now. Just remember that the Bronze level coaching is a ONE TIME training and is not every year. While it can seem like a lot up front, it is a one time training!

Quote from Bigtown on March 21, 2023, 9:49 amYou can always just not coach. It'll save you money, time, heartbreak, elation, and your voice. It's $10 to coach at state if you're certified. Or are you just coming on here to complain your athletes are only wrestling at AAU regions and state, and not any other USA sanctioned events. Because there are more events they can go to, and you would be able to coach at those as well, if certified.

Quote from UpNOut on March 21, 2023, 12:23 pmTo add....this $80 you talk about is a "1 time" Bronze certification training. You do not need to take every year. If you coach AAU at Districts ($25), Regions ($25), and state ($50)...and that is every year! This Bronze level training will allow you to coach at most any state, or regional USA event your wrestler decides to participate in. In 2021 there was a window of about 6-8 months where USA wrestling made all Copper and Bronze level coaching certifications FREE! Granted, maybe your wrestler was not active at that time in USA events, but it was widely advertised within the channels of South Dakota USA wrestling for everyone to take advantage of this opportunity.
