Girls registration for state

attached is the number of girls per weight class.  Notice there will be 26 girls unable to wrestle at state because they combined weight class. They are only allowing 16 per weight class.  This is a sport that is new to girls high school wrestling.   Why not split a and b classes.  Get more exposure and more participants to talk about there great experience.  Just my thoughts. I like the thought, I certainly would not be opposed. My only question is the feasibility of a combined boys and girls state wrestling tournament if there are 4 classes. Maybe it is possible to do? I would assume the Premier Center would be the only venue large enough to host something like that. I like that girls and boys state can be held together though, I think it will add to the atmosphere of the state tournament as years go on. But, at the moment, if the girls had a state tournament of their own, I think it would be a drawback for them. Mostly because it's not big enough yet to replicate the environment of the boys' state tournament, which I think is a huge draw.

I am totally on board with the side of promoting the girls side of the sport, the growth in numbers has been nothing short of impressive.  My own daughter has now followed her brothers footsteps and decided to step on the mat.  She is 1 of the girls that fell just a bit short of qualifying for state this year, and we are ok with that.  One issue in a split tourney for the girls at this current time is simply numbers.  A schools have considerably more girls to draw from - generally speaking.  Canton and VHIW being notable exceptions on the B side, and a tip of the hat to the success they are having, but, when most other B schools might have 1-3 girls, if any at all, numbers can become a bit of an issue.  The great news is, girls numbers basically doubled in a year, and I think there will be continued growth.  I think the state is doing a decent job of being fluid enough to adjust with the numbers, and full brackets at state I feel is a great step in the right direction.  I think a next step could possibly be setting up some sort of region system for the girls, and having a region tourney.  Give these girls a few more years, and I feel we will see the numbers continue to rise, and eventually splitting the classes will make a great deal of sense.  Until then, Best of luck this weekend Ladies, and we will be cheering you on from the stands, and hopefully she will be joining you down on the mats next season!
