Class B Region Alignments

Just wanted to put this out there for discussion... Also want to mention that 8 of the top 15 rated teams come out of region 3.  Maybe it's time for a realignment?  Thank you to the folks who put the ratings together.

Interesting thought, but what would you do in 3-5 years if that swings the other way? re-draw the lines again? Just wondering out loud here

What do the state placing by region look like over the last 10-12 years? That would tell a story also, a little more concrete than current rankings

Other thoughts?

Not positive,  but I think if you go back 10-12 years, region 3 consistently produces the most state players. Realignment is an interesting thought,  but the logistics would probably be a nightmare.

Looking at the alignment map, moving Winner over to Region 4 is probably the easiest single move without a total reshuffle (however, very convienient for Winner). Moves 10 "top 8s" out of Region 3 and it still will have close to 10 more top 8s. Other moves would probably involve shuffling a bunch of teams in the middle.

Not sure if St. Francis still has a team? If any teams are moving up or down next realignment could affect a things. Cool topic!

Moving St Francis to Region 4 does not solve the topic at hand.  Another possible scenario could be moving Wagner, Bon Homme or Parkston to Region 2.

This discussion is starting to sound like a modern-day kid’s event, everyone gets a partition ribbon that if you don’t like the way the outcome from the regions placing at state just move teams to another region.

What happened to going with the hand you were delt?

I like Viper’s thoughts – (interesting thought, but what would you do in 3-5 years if that swings the other way? re-draw the lines again?)

I’m not so sure that realigning the regions is the best way to go about things, but I think the point of the conversation is to put the best 16 guys at the state tournament. Since Convoy seems to be out of the loop I will mention that region 3 in the Bs has been the the deepest region for at least a couple of decades.

My main idea was the moving of Winner to 4. St. Francis clearly wouldn't make a difference (almost positive they don't have a team), but I know the SDHSAA would want it to make sense geographically. I think your idea works as well, maybe throwing two of those teams to Region 2 and moving either Howard or MCM up to Region 1 evens 3 regions out in a couple moves.

As far as participation trophies go: we live in a state of under 900,000 people with 7 classes for football and 2 classes for wrestling, I think we can afford to discuss the message board idea of moving a team or two around to make regions in the B's more equitable.

Flip flopping Winner and Lyman County, and 1 more move on the east side of region 3 would definitely make a difference.

the goal is to crown a champ. the current format does that. Nothing wrong with a competitive region, making state should mean something

"the goal is to crown a champ." Nobody wins a state title at regions. Winning a region title doesn't guarantee that you'll even place higher than the other 3 wrestlers from your region. "making state should mean something" Happens to be the issue that a change would address for the regions outside of region 3.

If the only goal is to crown a state champ then what is the point of seeding the state tournament? The point of seeding was to make the state tournament better. More evenly distributing the regions would be an attempt to do the same thing. I don’t see how you could look at that as a negative thing.

Has anyone thought of taking the top 3 placers from region to state instead of 4, and then having 4 of the best wildcards from the 4-6th place finishers at regions. This way the best regions which may have 5 or 6 of the top 16 wrestlers in the state could get the overall best kids to state. Isn't the goal to get the best 16 wrestlers to state. If you look at the current rankings, region 3 has 5 weight classes with 4 wrestlers in the top 8. I would bet they have a 5th wrestler in some of those weight classes that belongs at state. Just a thought
