It is true that a single decision can have the power to change the world. The impact of that decision can create a ripple effect that touches the lives of those around us. This truth is one of the most difficult and challenging aspects of this book. As I reflect on the decisions I have made in my own life, I am forced to ask myself difficult questions. Did I make the right choice? Do I have any regrets? Or can I trust in the belief that my destiny is assured, as the book suggests? The weight of our decisions can feel heavy, but we must remember that each one has the potential to create a positive impact on the world.
The end of the book brings to mind several movies that I will discuss later. However, to provide context to what I am exploring, David has a vision of himself in the future. He sees himself as an old man in a stadium filled with fans and loved ones, with a sense of peace and contentment. He is telling history and proclaiming the Seven Decisions. This vision has a significant impact on David as it helps him realize the importance of living a purposeful and meaningful life.
David understands that the decisions he made in the past have led him to this moment, and he realizes that the choices he makes today will impact his future. He also learns that by focusing on his values and priorities, he can create a fulfilling and rewarding life.
One line that stands out to me is “hedge of thorns” (a biblical reference). The hedge of thorns is often used as a metaphor for the protective barrier that God places around his people. In “The Traveler’s Gift,” the hedge of thorns symbolizes the protection that comes from staying true to one’s values and beliefs and the consequences that can arise from straying from that path. It serves as a reminder that our choices have consequences, both positive and negative.
The story that had the most impact on me was the one that “older” David told the crowd at the arena, about a Civil War charge moment. A do-or-die situation where a pause in a decision would mean everything. The story of Colonel Joshua Chamberlain and his heroism during the Battle of Gettysburg was impactful.
Movies that explore themes of fate, chance, and the power of our choices to shape our lives also stood out to me. They examine the idea that even seemingly small decisions can have a significant impact on our future. Examples include “Sliding Doors,” “The Butterfly Effect,” “Quantum Leap,” and “Back to the Future.”
To take the Seven Decisions to heart, I printed them on a business card and laminated it. I plan on using it as my mantra for the next 21 days and beyond. I also wrote a proclamation.
- The buck stops here. I am responsible for my past and my future.
- I will seek wisdom. I will be a servant to others.
- I am a person of action. I seize this moment. I choose now.
- I have a decided heart. My destiny is assured.
- Today I will choose to be happy. I am the possessor of a grateful spirit.
- I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. I will forgive myself.
- I will persist without exception. I am a person of great faith.
Now I made a proclamation… Join me if you wish to sign it…
Here is a proclamation that incorporates the qualities I listed as a Teacher, Dad, athlete and coach:
Proclamation of Responsibility, Wisdom, Action, Gratitude, and Faith
Whereas, I, [Jon Gums], am committed to living a life of purpose, meaning, and fulfillment, and
Whereas, I recognize that to achieve this, I must embrace certain values and qualities that will guide me on my journey, and
Whereas, I believe that personal responsibility, seeking wisdom, taking decisive action, having a grateful heart, and unwavering faith are essential to creating the life I desire,

A+ Book!
One more thing I started to write in the last article was about Faith and this book… I am adding this hours later as I some how forgot to put it in here.
Each of the seven historical figures that David Ponder meets on his journey refers to faith in some way. Here is a brief summary of how I see each character discusses faith and its connection to success:
- Harry S. Truman: Truman speaks about the importance of having faith in oneself and in God. He believes that faith is necessary to overcome the obstacles and challenges that we face in life.
- King Solomon: Solomon speaks about the wisdom that comes from having faith in God. He believes that faith allows us to see beyond our immediate circumstances and make decisions that are guided by a higher power.
- Joshua Chamberlain: Chamberlain speaks about the importance of having faith in a cause or a mission. He believes that having faith in something greater than oneself can inspire courage and determination in the face of adversity.
- Anne Frank: Anne Frank speaks about the role of faith in providing hope and strength in difficult times. She believes that faith can help us find meaning and purpose in life even in the midst of suffering.
- Abraham Lincoln: Lincoln speaks about the connection between faith and perseverance. He believes that having faith in oneself and in a higher power can help us overcome setbacks and continue moving forward towards our goals.
- Gabriel: Gabriel speaks about the power of faith in connecting us to a larger, spiritual reality. He believes that having faith can help us find our place in the universe and understand our purpose in life.
- Christopher Columbus: Columbus speaks about the importance of having faith in one’s dreams and visions. He believes that faith can help us see possibilities that others cannot and inspire us to take action to make our dreams a reality.
Overall, the book suggests that faith is a key ingredient to success in life. Whether it is faith in oneself, in a cause or mission, in God, or in a larger spiritual reality, having faith can provide the courage, wisdom, and perseverance needed to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.
