Blees attended Bismarck High School, where he accumulated a record of 250-25 and was a five-time Fargo National All-American. He won the 2013 Junior National freestyle championship at 152 pounds. and 160 in 2014 From Oklahoma State to Virginia Tech competed at the Div I level and was a 2x NCAA Div. I Qualifier.
