Sometimes school administrators and school boards use coaches as a scapegoat instead of addressing  the real problem.  We see it happen too many times.  The fact is that the real problems remain.  This is one of those sometimes.  1000 SMITES to Aberdeen's administrators and school board and to those who stood by and did nothing. The good news is that some school will be getting a great coach.  Good luck coach.

Where is Shawn going??
As of right now I do not know where my family and I will be heading.  All doors are being left open at this point.  I am considering positions in wrestling and out, in South Dakota and out, and even in education and out.  To be safe and not comment further, this is a decision that I of course did not want, agree with, or have any clue it was coming.  I love the kids and parents at Aberdeen and so this has been hard on me and my family because that is how we treated the wrestlers, like family.  Either way,  I know God must have a plan for me, he is testing me with this situation to see how strong I am, and so I will continue to do what I preach.  I will "keep my mouth shut and do the work that my ultimate goals require of me."  As soon as I know where I will be heading I will let everyone know.

I also truly hope that this job gets the proper amount of great candidates it deserves.  It is not an easy job but Toby and I have really worked to build this thing from the bottom up.  Aberdeen Central has a great youth program with outstanding coaching and big numbers.  The middle school program is a very solid transition team and the high school program only graduated three kids.

Coach

You are an outstanding man.  I admire your courage, dedication, faith and continued support of your coworkers and Aberdeen's wrestling program (youth, middle school and high school).  I do not wish any ill upon the program and those who remain.  But unlike you, I cannot support any administration or school board anywhere in any district that does this. I guess that makes you a better man than I (and certainly a better man than those who turned your life upside down).  In the end it is best that you are now free from that mess.  But I do already feel sorry for the next who steps in and gets blindsided and used as a scapegoat.

Coaching is the absolute best job in the world, and unfortunately, also the worst.

Again, I wish that you and your family land soundly on your feet - hopefully in South Dakota - and near a wrestling mat.

I do not teach Math.  I teach Physical Science and Geology currently but have taught Biology, 8th Grade Earth Science, 7th Grade Life Science, and Health.  I have a 7-12 Administration Masters as well.

Agreed completely.  One of the more successful programs at Aberdeen Central.  Over the last 2 years combined the football and basketball programs have managed to win around 10 games total and yet the wrestling coach gets fired.

Aberdeen has never been a big wrestling town.. They worship their BB win or lose, they will do anything to see BB get ahead of Wrestling.. Even as bad as their BB team has been the last couple of years, it's too bad..

Aberdeen used to be a basketball town.  A lot of work has been put into the youth wrestling and football and i think it won't be long before we start to see the benefits from that.  This season there were alot more fans at the wrestling duals than there were at the boys basketball games.  I hope Central puts some effort into the search for a new coach.  A successful program needs alot of things to make it work.  The head coach can make or break a program though.  Aberdeen central wrestling was terrible before Toby came in.  The didn't have the numbers or a decent youth program.  Toby addressed both.  He recruited junior high and high school kids and found good coaches for the youth program.  Coach Lewis didn't drop the ball when he took over.  He made sure the youth program had great coaches.  Thanks Coach Lewis for everything you did with the Central wrestling program and i wish the best of luck to you on your future.

IF we accept your statement about Aberdeen...You do realise that in some communities the scenario may be reversed???

I have always though of Aberdeen as a good "sports" town. I know they have put on a "heck of" wrestling tourney over the years.

I wish coach Lewis the best of luck in the future...by all accounts he seems to be a good coach & a quality person!
