My first choice would be Steiner, just curious what others think.

Terry Brands would be a good choice, but probably unlikely.  I would bet if he did take the job SDSU would have at least 2 AA in the 1st 2 years on the job.  I think he would get some big name recruits.

PEOPLE! Let's stop smoking crack!! Brands would NEVER come to SDSU... let's get real!

The best bet is an accomplished asst. from a high profile D I program. But NOT Brands....

WYO/UNI asst?
NE? ISU? MN??

I would agree that Brands is a long shot.  I would think that most top assistants from a high profile university would be a long shot, especially if SDSU is as underfunded as has been referred to several times on this site.  I would still think you could get a high quality coach with a good name to bring in recruits and develop a program.  I think you might be looking at someone that wants to use SDSU as a stepping stone to something bigger, you never know though.  I don't know who that is, but I hope the Jacks act soon.

Steiner as Head Coach, Assistants could be Eustice and Lamer.   That would be a solid staff.   Pay them all a fair wage, comparable to say UNI.   Then fund all 9.9 scholarships.      You would have Steiner from ND, Eustice from Southern MN, Lamer from SD.   They should be able to recruit their own back yards.   ...And they would instantly have 2 full rides to give out. I think you would be hearing some noise out of SDSU very quickly.   (However, Lamer has to move to Brookings, I don't want all those Lamer boys wrestling for Tri-Valley in the future. :D)

Lamer would be great but he and his family moved to Oregon last year.

I would politely disagree with you on this.  Chad is good, but coaching at the college level is a different game.  You need somebody that is personable and can go into a family's home and sell them on the program as a whole.  It is not just about coaching.  In my opinion the Head Coach is the administrator of the program and his assistants are the ones who physically and mentally prepare the wrestlers each week.  Not to say the head coach isn't involed with the prep.  But that is why at so many of the big tournments you don't see the head coach in the mat chair it is one of the assistants that has worked with that wrestler.   I don't know if any of the ones listed has the personality to be the face of the program and to recruit the top quality wrestlers.  This would be a nice challenges for Terry Brands to come in and build his own program and if I was recruiting him, I would lay that challenge out there for him.  Being a competitor he may take that challenge.  Just thinking.

Here is Troy Steiners's bio taken from the OSU website.  I'm sure he could persuade some top notch recruits that he could take them where they want to go.  He has tons of experience mentoring under some of the best in the business, and has ties to the best wrestling states in our region.  I honestly don't believe the Jacks can do better, maybe he wouldn't be interested in the job.

Troy Steiner continued his association with Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky when he was hired on April 28, 2006. He begins his fifth season back at Oregon State.

Steiner had been on Zalesky's coaching staff for the past two seasons at Iowa, and he previously worked at Oregon State as an assistant coach to former head coach Joe Wells during the 1995-96 season.

Prior to working with Zalesky at Iowa, Steiner owned and operated the ADVANCE School of Wrestling in Madison, Wis., for four years. He also served as an assistant coach at Wisconsin from 1997-2001 and Minnesota in 1996-97. During his career, Steiner has coached 22 All-Americans, 10 Big Ten champions, six NCAA champions and one junior FILA World Freestyle champion.

Steiner was a four-time all-American at Iowa from 1990-93 and a NCAA champion in 1992. He won three Big Ten titles at Iowa, compiling a 148-13 career record at 134 and 142 pounds. He and his twin brother, Terry, were part of three national and four Big Ten championship teams.

Steiner shares Iowa's school record for best season winning percentage for the 42-0 record he compiled during his junior season. He also ranks third in career wins (148) and sixth in season wins (42) in the Hawkeyes' illustrious wrestling history.

In post-collegiate competition, Steiner was a nine-time U.S. National team member, winning the 1992 World Cup and the 1996 Pan-American Games titles. He placed third at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1992 and 1996, and fifth in 2000. A native of Bismarck, N.D., Steiner was inducted into the North Dakota Hall of Fame in 1998.

Steiner received his bachelor's degree in Social Work from Iowa in 1993 and his master's degree in Kinesiology with a sports management emphasis from Minnesota in 1998. He and his wife Shawn have two children, Spencer and Abbigail.

Steiner sounds like he would be a great fit.  Unfortunately, it would probably be too good to be true.

I like the sound of guys like Pendelton. Already knows the conference. Big name and attraction. Probobly looking for a head coaching job. Maybe even the likes of Zattick. He probobly doesnt want to be an assistant forever.  Steiner would be goog as well. I think there will be some great names in the hat for the position. I think SDSU is a great opportunity for a young guy looking to build a program. We are in a great spot here in the midwest for recruiting as well. I personally think we need a bigger name, and someone with plenty of experience already coaching at this level.

I'll bet Chad applies, and is seriously considered.

Personally, would like to see Steiner, get it. I'd have a hard time rooting for my Bison in a dual.

Tyler, Pendleton and Zadick are names that I considered adding to the poll along with Bryan Snyder and Luke Becker.  The point being that there are a ton of great possibilities and only about 70 of these jobs in the nation.  I don't think SDSU needs to settle like I believe the Bison did, nothing against Roger Kish, I am a huge Gophers fan and hope he has a great deal of success, just think it may have been a little premature to hand the program over to him.
