My understanding per instruction that was given by Bob Johnson to one of our tournament directors is that a kid can bump from districts to regionals if there is an opening. We had that occur at another weight and division as well and the kid got to wrestle for a chance at State at the heavier weight, although he did not place in the top 3.
I do know that if he didn't show or make weight at regionals, he does not get an automatic pass to State at his district qualified weight. That is, even though he was the only qualifier from either district, he still had to show up to weigh ins and make weight to get the State spot at 160.
However, as we only had 2 wrestlers at 180, there were plenty of openings and he was eligible per Bob's instruction stated above. Could he have waited and requested the open spot at the higher weight at State without even wrestling in Regionals? I don't know the answer to that.
As it is, he won both matches against heavier opponents and deserves the 1 seed from Region 1 in my opinion. The other two wrestlers are both going as well, nobody got bumped.
