Overcoming a second bout of diverticulitis won't be Brock Lesnar's only big challenge when he makes his UFC comeback.

Lesnar's return bout will be Dec. 30 against Alistair Overeem, a champion not only in Strikeforce - a rival mixed martial arts organization now owned by UFC - but also in kickboxing's K-1 World Grand Prix.

The former Bismarck State College grappler lost his UFC heavyweight championship to Cain Velasquez on Oct. 23, 2010. Lesnar then was scheduled to take on Junior dos Santos, but had to pull out of the fight to have a portion of his colon removed.

The 34-year-old Lesnar - who won championships in the NJCAA, NCAA Division I and WWE as well as the UFC - has a 5-2 record in MMA.

Like Lesnar, the 31-year-old Overeem is an imposing specimen at 6-foot-5 and 256 pounds. Unlike Lesnar, whose strength is obviously his wrestling, Overeem is regarded as one of the sport's top strikers.

Despite never fighting in UFC, Overeem has plenty of experience against top-flight competition, with a 35-11 record, including 14 knockouts and 19 submissions.

Overeem has scored wins over Vitor Belfort, Brett Rogers, Gary Goodridge and Mark Hunt. He has lost twice each to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, both former UFC champs. He also was defeated by Chuck Liddell.

Overeem's last fight was June 18, when he scored a unanimous decision over Fabricio Werdum, avenging an earlier defeat. Overeem has won 10 of his last 11 fights, with the other being a no-contest against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

The winner of the Lesnar-Overeem bout is expected to get a title shot with the winner of the Velasquez-dos Santos bout, scheduled for Nov. 12.

Though I like Brock, he is not that good of a fighter.  He basically got his ass kicked by Carwin and then did by Cain.  Even if he beats AO he will most likely get pounded by Cain or JR, either one will blast him.  He needs to focus on his boxing.  When he improves there he will improve as a fighter.  Cardio is 2nd to none but its no good when your getting killed in the 2nd round.

I would not mess with Brock as he is a very big guy for sure but when you put him against other UFC HWT's like Cain or JR, he would get his ass kicked.
I hope he gets better but there are some fighters that when the flurry of punches starts coming they fold and he is one of them.
I would even bet the Roy " Big Country " would bear Brock.  If he had a rematch with Carwin he would get schooled.  Excellent College Wrestler and WWE actor, still working on fighting.  He only got the title fight so fast bc of his fame and ability to sell out big cards.

I'm glad you don't hang out on this site all the time.   ;)   Brock just collected on last pay check on his way out.  Too bad.

Once he started having problems with the diverticulitis, he wasn't the same guy.  He had a great sports career and I wish him the best in the future.

Okay Brock doesn't suck at fighting. Anyone that has been a UFC champion obviously doesn't suck.. He might not be the best heavyweight in the UFC right now, maybe not even top five.. heck it doesn't matter cause he's already retired but give the guy some credit for the way he was able to jump into the UFC with little to no previous experience and was successfully able to compete with some of the best fighters in the world. Pretty cool to see someone from SD doing that if you ask me.

Yes, agreed it is cool that someone from SD has made the limelight.  He beat Heath Hearing who sucked, lost to Mir, Beat Randy C who was on his last leg, avenged loss to Mir which looked good, Beat Shane C that was good,  got spanked against Caine and skanked against Alister.

If you look at his MMA career, bc he is a big ticket guy he was brought in to beat Randy C to become the champ so it was basically set up for him. Dana knew he would sell out arenas.  He would never beat a real champion.  I will give him some credit.

Brock Lesnar won the UFC title within a yr and a half of being in the sport.... PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. The fact that he beat Frank Mir ( Top ten guy who is very skilled all around) and Shane Carwin ( Top ten guy who is also very skilled) says a lot! He did lose to the top skilled fighters in the world after a severe sickness..... I dont necessarily like his antics in the cage but this guy is a great person and someone a fighter from SD has to look up to.
